Most people never think about who is legally allowed to perform a wedding. In New York a mayor is one of them. The Mayor of Yonkers actually does it.
The First Time
Go through the City of Yonkers photo archive and you find them scattered through the years. A wedding in June 2023. Another in March 2024. Another this past July.
The best one is June 2025, out on the City Hall steps. Mayor Mike Spano is holding a blue folder and reading the vows. The groom is laughing.
These are not big civic events. They are people getting married, with the guy who runs the city standing in front of them doing the honors. Somebody's aunt is filming it on her phone in the background.
The Second Time
Then there is the other one, and almost nobody knows about this part.
Every year around Valentine's Day, Yonkers City Hall hosts a vow renewal ceremony. The council chamber is all dark wood and leather chairs and the gold city seal. For one afternoon it also gets a giant heart made out of pink and red balloons. Couples fill the room. The Mayor stands at the podium and marries them all over again.
There is exactly one requirement. You have to have been married fifty years or more.
The most recent one was February 10. Look at the photographs from that afternoon and it is mostly quiet moments. An older couple standing close, her in a black velvet hat, him in a gold tie, just looking at each other. A room full of people who have been doing this a long time.
The Part That Makes It Nice
The mayor who marries you is not going to be the mayor who renews your vows. Fifty years is fifty years. The Mayor has been in office since 2012 and even he is not making that math work.
That is sort of the point. The ceremony is not about whoever is holding the folder. It is the building that stays. Get married on those steps in 2026 and there is a room upstairs where, in 2076, somebody else's administration will hang a balloon heart and call your name out.
Cities do a lot of ceremonial things that mean very little. This one is not that. A vow renewal for fifty year couples costs almost nothing, and it is not for the mayor. It is for the people in the chairs. Fifty years is genuinely rare now, and there are enough couples here who have done it to fill a room on a Tuesday afternoon in February.
